The physical and emotional rewards accompanying raising lovely, sustainable wool go far beyond the beauty of the final product. My husband, Gordon, and I run a flock of approximately 125 Polypays, Merinos, and natural colored Rambouillet / Columbia crosses in northwest Illinois. I’ve added a few Targhee ewes and a Rambouillet ewe to the Merino pen for other fun wool crosses. Our pastures and pens include sheep and lambs of a variety of sizes, colors, and wool patterns. In collaboration with Midwest Mills (and now one in WY), our sheep create the finest Illinois-grown combed top, roving, and a variety of yarn, including core-spun yarn. I use our wool to create batts with a variety of add-ins. Our wool, locally grown alpaca, small-farm-sourced mohair, and a splash of silk allow me to create some pretty sweet spinning batts. The fiber arts community is pretty special. My friend and I started the Illinois Fiber Festival in 2023 to promote and support Midwestern fiber farmers. We, along with 30+ vendors, fiber teachers, our friends &amp; volunteers, have created a pretty neat event. I appreciate the opportunity to connect with like-minded people in the fiber community. I love connecting with customers and learning about their projects created with our wool. On a personal/and different professional side: My husband and I have raised 5 sons, and we now have 2 daughters-in-law. I will start my 37th year of teaching students with disabilities (on August 12), and have taught Jazzercise for 34 years. 16	17	18	19	20	21Workshop – Heavenly BresserWorkshop – Heavenly BresserFriday 8/21 9-12am: Think Outside the Braid  Join us as we explore different ways to spin combed-top braids including gradient spinning, combination drafting, and spinning multiple braids together into one yarn. We will use both color theory and creativity for the best results. Our goal is to gain confidence in spinning braids with varying colors into a cohesive yarn and to think outside the box to achieve your desired outcome from the raw materials. This is a drop-spindle friendly class! Friday 8/21 1-4 pm: Blend and Spin with Wild Silk Wild silks are unique, exquisite fibers that are perfect for the handspinner’s stash. When compared to bombyx silk, they are less slippery, shorter, and often easier to spin. These silks are quite desirable and great candidates for blending, especially considering their beautiful range of colors. Let’s go wild and learn special blending techniques and get comfortable with blending a variety of wild silk with handcards. Then, we’ll take them to wheel or spindle for a spin. Heavenly will also demonstrate how to blend with wild silks using a blending board and drumcarder. You’ll leave this session knowing how to create colorful, elegant, and sophisticated blends that are worthy of spinning. Saturday, 8/22 1-4 pm Slow to Quick: Ease Your Way into Longdraw The use of long draw techniques has such great benefits for the handspinner. Those lofty, warm, and airy yarns can be produced by use of a long draw method. For many handspinners, long draw methods are quite a mystery and can be frustrating. So let’s remove the obstacles. Learn how to properly set up your spinning wheel to ease your way into supported and unsupported long draw, how to choose the best prep for practicing and achieving the results you want, and learn how these techniques can be used for other spinning equipment. She was also recently a guest on the SweetGeorgia Show podcast. Meetings:

Monthly guild meetings are held from 10 am to 1 pm on the 4th Saturday of each month except December. Doors open at 9:00 am. We meet at:

St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church

Los Angeles CA 90064

Meetings include a short informational program, study groups focused on spinning techniques, information on members’ projects, and informal spinning. We occasionally have guest vendors attend.

Workshops:

The guild periodically hosts workshops led by members or guest instructors. Guild members receive priority registration for workshops, with remaining open seats available to non-members.

Demonstrations:

As part of our mission to educate the Greater Los Angeles area residents on the art of spinning, we perform spinning demonstrations at public events throughout the year. Our demonstrations consist of members showing spinning on spindles or spinning wheels, and may include hands-on instruction. Many events are free to the public.

Fiber Events:

We are fortunate to have many fiber arts events in the Greater Los Angeles area throughout the year. GLASG often has a booth or demonstration onsite at these events, and if not, many of our members are in attendance.
