Program: Combo Spin Hello Spinners! Our program at our August 24th meeting will be all about Combo Spinning — what defines a combo spin, different techniques that can be used to achieve different looks in your combo yarn, and some ideas for finished products. Combo spinning is just the practice of combining two or more different colorways and/or fibers together, resulting in a new blend of your own. We’ll look at some examples and hopefully inspire you to try some different techniques. If you have some finished yarn or projects made with a combo spin that you’d like to share, please bring them! In order to facilitate a fun multi-colored combo spin without having to buy a bunch of different colorways on your own, we’re going to do a Fiber Swap. To participate, all you have to do is bring at least 2 ounces of fiber that you will swap with the group. Bring as much as you’d like, but bring at least 2 ounces, and split all your fiber into 1 ounce sections. Then we’ll run the swap, where you will get to choose someone else’s fiber to take home. For example, if you bring 8 ounces of fiber, you will take home 8 ounces of different fibers. We have some rules to make it fair to everyone, and we’ll go through those at the meeting. But here are some key rules to follow if you plan to participate: 1) Bring only wool and mostly wool blends. Please, no cotton, no mohair, no 100% silk, no cashmere/yak/camel/bison/vicuna (not that you’d want to give those lovelies up!) — please just wool and nice wool blends. This is not a time to get rid of felted, yucky fibers that you’d never spin yourself. But it is a time to give up those colorways that you know are not your favorites. Be kind to your other Guild members and bring nice stuff! 2) Bring only clean, pest-free fiber. If you think it might have issues, DON’T bring it. 3) Bring dyed commercial top or roving. Since the point of this combo spin is to play with different colors, bringing natural-colored fibers kind of defeats the purpose. Solids are okay, but it would be preferable to have some really great colorways to play with. 4) Bring at least 2 ounces. Split your fiber into 1 ounce strips. We’ll have scales at the meeting if you can’t do it at home. | ||||||||||||

Meetings:
Monthly guild meetings are held from 10 am to 1 pm on the 4th Saturday of each month except December. Doors open at 9:00 am. We meet at:
St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church
11555 National Blvd
Los Angeles CA 90064
Meetings include a short informational program, study groups focused on spinning techniques, information on members’ projects, and informal spinning. We occasionally have guest vendors attend.
Workshops:
The guild periodically hosts workshops led by members or guest instructors. Guild members receive priority registration for workshops, with remaining open seats available to non-members.
Demonstrations:
As part of our mission to educate the Greater Los Angeles area residents on the art of spinning, we perform spinning demonstrations at public events throughout the year. Our demonstrations consist of members showing spinning on spindles or spinning wheels, and may include hands-on instruction. Many events are free to the public.
Fiber Events:
We are fortunate to have many fiber arts events in the Greater Los Angeles area throughout the year. GLASG often has a booth or demonstration onsite at these events, and if not, many of our members are in attendance.
